Welcome to Cork! Our hub for biopharma and life sciences
Exyte has expanded its presence in Ireland with the opening of a Biopharma and Life Sciences Office in Cork.
The vibrant and growing city in the south of the island is known as a hub for biopharmaceutical discovery and manufacturing. This location provides Exyte with many new opportunities to serve clients and expand its Biopharma and Life Sciences business segment.
IBEC, the Irish Business and Employers Confederation, estimates that 84,000 highly skilled people across Ireland are directly and indirectly employed in the sectors of biopharma, medtech, and digital health. According to Ireland’s Central Statistics Office the pharmaceutical sector reported a net selling value (NSV) of 58.1 billion Euro in 2021, equaling 43,6 percent of the country’s total.
“Ireland is the world’s third-largest net exporter of pharmaceuticals and a global powerhouse in the Life Science Sector, with significant investment expected in major projects from biotechnology to fill and finish, API, as well as cell and gene therapy,” says Padraic Brennan, Senior Vice President Biopharma and Life Sciences for Northern Europe at Exyte. Ireland profits from a highly educated young, versatile, and English-speaking workforce, its membership in the European Union, the island’s proximity to mainland Europe, and sea transport routes to North America.
Why Cork?
Munster, the southernmost province of Ireland, and particularly Cork City and its vicinity, are the location of choice for those in the biopharma and life sciences industry. Since the opening of the Pfizer plant in Ringaskiddy in County Cork in 1969, the pharma industry has expanded continuously with many of the world-leading pharmaceutical companies having operations across the Munster province both in the cities and in more remote areas.
In addition to its vibrant pharma sector, Cork is also home to several universities and colleges, and is well-connected to the rest of Ireland and Europe by air, rail, and road.
As an industry leader, Exyte looks to continue sustainable growth in Ireland, based on a strong performance with a reputation for industry knowledge and project delivery management. The office in Cork, as an addition to the office in Maynooth next to Dublin, is providing additional resources to clients in one of the most regulated industries. “We see over 15 billion Euro in investment within Ireland and Northern Europe over the next five years in pharmaceutical projects”, says Padraig Finn, Senior Vice President Business Acquisition Biopharma and Life Sciences . Finn works closely with Exyte clients and explores the possibilities to partner and deliver high value projects.
Exyte utilizes innovative technology
The Biopharma and Life Sciences sector is a key component in Exyte’s target ‘Pathway to Ten’, the goal to reach annual sales of 10 billion Euro. The company’s Biopharma and Life Sciences business places a sharp focus on client requisites in delivering facilities and manufacturing plants for top-tier international companies. Exyte’s clients are working tirelessly to bring crucial drugs to market and secure international supply lines.
As President of Exyte’s Biopharma and Life Sciences business unit Ronan Donohue holds a key global role in Exyte and drives the global perspective, with responsibility for global project delivery including engineering and construction. “The rapid changes in the pharma and biopharma industry have brought challenges and opportunities. In response, Exyte has achieved significant growth in the sector because of our innovative and flexible approach to project execution incorporating modular and off-site solutions while maintaining a focus on predictability of delivery, which is key for our clients. Exyte is a safe pair of hands,” Donohue says.
“The global market for pharmaceutical applications is changing, driven by technical innovations such as mRNA, and by the further spread of civilization diseases. In consequence, the demand for drugs, medicines and other medical treatments increases. Exyte sees great potential in this market. The expansion of this business is a key field of action for us,” says Brennan, who has extensive expertise in the delivery of global projects in the life science and food & beverage sectors.
A crucial Exyte product is ExyCell®, a high-quality modular system tailored to meet client needs to reduce time-to-market, ensure cost certainty, and enhance safety and quality to biomanufacturing production facilities. The system with pre-configured and pre-fabricated modules has proven highly successful in delivering the fast-track construction of biopharma production facilities developed by Exyte.
